Okay, I've read all 4 books now, so I can discuss. In my opinion, there are worse things for my middle schooler to be interested in. My daughter is 12, and I have no problem with her reading the first two books. We have read all the Harry Potters, and these aren't that much different.
That being said, the third and fourth have more mature subject matter that I'd rather not have her read yet. I wasn't keen on Bella begging Edward to sleep with her.
I wouldn't bring a child younger than 11 or 12 to the theatre to watch these movies because my kids stay sheltered for maybe longer than the masses. I try not to worry too much about what other families do, though. I remember sitting in Jurassic Park with preschoolers all around me.
